The short answer

What to do when your mini-split stops working

Check the breaker, the remote and the filters first, write down any code or blinking pattern, then call a technician who works on ductless systems. Mini-splits are not central air: the indoor head, the outdoor unit and the line set between them talk to each other electronically, so fixing them takes the right diagnostic tools and, for anything involving refrigerant, an EPA-certified technician.

Most problems fall into a few groups. A unit that runs but won't cool or heat is often low on refrigerant, iced up or dirty. Water dripping from the indoor unit almost always means a clogged condensate drain or a failed pump — common in Florida's humidity. A blinking light or error code is the unit telling you where the fault is.

Common problems

What's your mini-split doing?

Each guide explains the likely causes, what you can safely check yourself, and what a technician will do.

How a ductless mini-split is put together An indoor wall unit connects through a small hole in the wall to an outdoor unit by a refrigerant line set, a power and communication cable and a condensate drain line. Indoor unit (head) Filters, coil, blower, sensors Line set refrigerant + cable Condensate drain Outdoor unit compressor, fan, board
Indoor unit: dirty filters and coils, mold, blower problems — see cleaning & maintenance. Condensate drain: the usual cause of water dripping from the head. Line set: flare-joint leaks lead to low refrigerant and poor cooling. Outdoor unit: fan, compressor and control-board faults — see outdoor unit problems.

Why Florida is different

What Florida's climate does to a mini-split

Humidity keeps the drain working overtime

A mini-split dehumidifies as it cools, and Florida gives it a lot to remove: the Florida Climate Center describes typical summer dew points around 70°F, with relative humidity above 90% overnight. All that water runs out through a small condensate line — and when algae or debris block it, the water comes out of the indoor unit instead. That's why leaks and mold in the indoor head are so common here.

Hurricane season and power outages

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. After Hurricane Irma, more than 6.5 million Florida customers were without power at the peak. Outages, surges and flooding can leave a unit showing a fault code once power returns — if a reset doesn't clear it, or the outdoor unit sat in water, have it checked before running it hard.

It's a heat pump, too

Almost every mini-split heats as well as cools. On a cold morning, a unit that only blows cool air in heat mode — or flashes a code — needs the same diagnosis as a summer no-cool call. See not cooling or heating.

Before anyone works on it

How to check a technician in Florida

Florida licenses air-conditioning contractors as Class A or Class B under section 489.105, Florida Statutes, and you can look up any license on the DBPR construction-industry site. Whoever you hire — through this line or anywhere else — ask for:

  1. Their Florida air-conditioning contractor license number — then check it on the DBPR site before work starts.
  2. EPA Section 608 certification for whoever handles refrigerant — EPA requires it for adding or removing refrigerant on a mini-split.
  3. The diagnostic or service-call fee, before they come out — most companies charge one.
  4. A written estimate listing the part, labor and any refrigerant before a repair is made.
  5. Who handles warranty work — manufacturer warranty repairs may have to go through the original installer or an authorized dealer.

We connect you with independent companies; we don't employ technicians or vouch for any company's work. Checking the license takes two minutes and is worth it.

FAQ

Mini-split questions Florida homeowners ask

Still unsure? Describe what your unit is doing and a local technician can tell you what it likely needs.

Are mini-splits worth repairing?

Usually, yes — most calls are for a clogged drain, dirty coil, failed sensor, fan motor or a leaking flare joint, all of which are repairable. Replacement starts to make sense when the compressor has failed on an older system, when the refrigerant it uses is getting hard to source, or when repairs keep stacking up. Our repair-or-replace guide walks through the decision.

Why did my mini-split stop working?

Start with the simple things: is the breaker or disconnect on, does the remote have batteries, is it set to the right mode, and are the filters clean? If the unit shows a code or a blinking light, write it down — it tells the technician where to look. See error codes & blinking lights and not cooling or heating.

Is there a reset button on a mini-split?

Many indoor units have a small manual or emergency operation button under the front panel, and switching power off at the breaker for a few minutes resets the electronics. A reset can clear a one-off fault after a power outage, but if the same code comes back, the unit needs a technician — repeated resets can hide a problem that gets more expensive.

Who will I be talking to when I call?

An independent HVAC company that serves your ZIP code and works on ductless systems. Mini Split Repair Florida is a referral service: we don't send technicians, set prices or take payment. The company you speak with gives you its own fees, estimate and schedule.

Does it cost anything to call?

Calling is free and there is no obligation. Most HVAC companies charge a diagnostic or service-call fee to come out — ask for it on the phone before you book.

Do the technicians work on my brand?

Technicians in the network work on the common ductless brands — Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, LG, MRCOOL and others — but not every company services every brand. Tell them the brand and model on the call. See our brand pages for Mitsubishi, Daikin, LG, Fujitsu and MRCOOL.
